CHAPTER NINE
KATIE was glad when the ambulance dropped her off outside the hospital. Traveling back in her wet clothes hadnât made for the most comfortable of journeys. Fortunately, their patient seemed to be holding his own so that was some consolation. She left Christos to supervise the unloading and headed into the department, smiling when she saw Mariaâs surprise as she walked through the door.
âKatie! Whatâs happened?â the older nurse exclaimed in dismay. âYouâre soaking wet.â
âI took an unscheduled dip in the sea.â She glanced down at her wet clothes and grimaced. âI couldnât borrow a spare set of scrubs to go home in, could I? The driver might not let me get on the bus looking like this.â
âOf course you can.â Maria hurried around the desk then stopped dead when Christos appeared. She shook her head when she saw the state of him. âNot you as well. What on earth have you two been up to?â
âWe got stuck in a cave with the tide coming in,â he explained succinctly. He turned to Katie and her heart seemed to leap into her throat when she saw the concern in his eyes. âYou should get changed. Youâll catch a chill if you donât find something dry to wear.â
âThatâs just what we were about to do when you arrived,â Maria said firmly, immediately taking charge. She ushered Katie into the theatre suite and opened the door to the womenâs changing room. âThereâs clean scrubs on the shelf. Just help yourself.â
âThanks.â Katie smiled gratefully as she took a clean set of clothes off the shelf. âHow did you get on in here? It must have been really busy.â
âOh, it was fine,â Maria said airily. âWhat about you? How did you get on?â
âIt was a bit hectic at times but we coped,â Katie replied, helping herself to a towel as well.
âI didnât mean that.â Maria smiled. âIâm more interested in how you and Christos got onâtogether.â
Katie felt a wash of heat run up her face when she realised what Maria meant. âChristos was in charge and I carried out his instructions,â she said carefully. âWhat more can I say?â
âA lot.â Maria grinned at her. âIâve known Christos for a long time and Iâve never seen him look so concerned about a member of staff before. Itâs obvious that thereâs something going on between you two.â
âThereâs nothing going on between me and Christos,â Katie denied hurriedly. Although she liked Maria, she certainly didnât want to be drawn into a discussion about her relationship with Christos.
Her heart lurched at the thought of her and Christos having a relationship and she rushed on. âHonestly.â
âIf you say so.â Maria didnât sound convinced but she obviously decided not to pursue the subject and left.
Katie took a shower then put on the clean scrubs. She found a plastic bag for her wet uniform then went back to the department to sign out. The day shift had all left now and the night staff were on duty. She checked how Eric Van der Halk was doing and was relieved when she was told that he had been sent to Theatre.
